 Training Minimize

Message from Head Coach, Steve Dorrington

Due to the adverse weather conditions and to keep and improve our fitness, we will be training at the Underground Training Station from 8 - 9pm but meeting at the club at 7pm (next Tues 12th Jan) .

Address: Unit 4 Carham Commercial Park, Carham Road, Hoylake, CH47 4FF

There is a lot more information on their website - http://www.undergroundtrainingstation.com/

Below is an extract from the site which will give you some idea what it is all about.

Philosophy

The Underground Training Station is a dedicated and focused performance centre.  This is not your typical gym. You will not find a single treadmill, bike or cross trainer, and neither will you see rows upon rows of the newest and trendiest resistance machines. We have no towel service, and it’s not compulsory to bring one with you either, we have a few showers – just in case you must have one, but we don’t offer any kind of pampering service; need your hair cut? Go find a salon. We don't have TV screens all over the place, and we don’t use an air conditioning system. Why? Because we don’t need any of that stuff, and more importantly, neither do you.

What we do have are the essentials needed to get stronger, more explosive, faster, further, and leaner. Whether you’re a local resident looking for something more from your exercise regime, or a local high school athlete looking to make the regional squad, an elite-level college/university athlete trying to make it to the podium, or even a local fire/police officer looking to get strong and lean, you will find yourself right at home here.

All too often people rely on sub-par methods to get fit and strong, taking advice from all the wrong people and falling all too often for the rubbish information that makes it into most health and fitness magazines. Athletes, and most of the general public that work out, spend too much time following modified body building routines or other programs that are ineffective at getting real world results and are now plain obsolete. These types of programs are exactly what is causing people to become unmotivated, weak, fat, un-athletic, and in the worse instance, injured.

What We Do:

At the Underground Training Station, we don’t care who you are. When you join our gym, our main goal is to help you become fitter, leaner, healthier and satisfied with your hard work. We provide a World Class service for people who have a fitness goal, whatever that goal might be. Our expertise has taken athletes to the World stage, form the Olympics to World Cups, from League Champions to National Titles. Our one firm belief is that all humans have the potential to be athletes. And, whether you’re playing sports professionally, or have a regular day-job, you need to be able to move and move well. What we focus on is getting people fitter and stronger; fitter and stronger than previously, and fitter and stronger than they ever dreamed.

Our Specialism is Athletic Development, Technical and Tactical Strength and Conditioning.  We have a Proven Track Record of Developing Elite Athletes in the Following Key Areas:

• Rugby (League and Union)

• Wrestling

• Basketball

• Football

• Track and Field

• Power Lifting

• MMA and Traditional Martial Arts

• Fire, Military, Security, and Law Enforcement Personnel

• Swimming

• Triathlon

• Running

 Rugby Landscape Minimize

The following email received 15/09/2008

Rugby Landscape Forum

Mike Lord and I attended the Forum comprising some 50 people, including Martyn Thomas, Francis  Baron and Nick Eastwood, met for two days over the weekend to consider  the results of the Landscape Survey. This had attracted 7,400 responses  which the consultants assured us was statistically robust. The work  would be taken forward after the Forum by the Task Group which would  prepare the presentation for the Road shows to take place in September as per the following schedule. The results would then be put to  Management Board at the end of the month and to Council on 3rd October with the possible implementation date of September 09.

After considering the survey in separate groups and together in  plenary, the Forum agreed on the following findings to be put to the Road shows:

League sizes at levels 3 and 4 should comprise 16 teams with 14 at  levels 5 and 6. There would also be no national cups at L4 and above.

Teams at level 5 and above should be considered National Clubs  (although there is no decision yet how they should be administered);

Blank weeks at levels 5 and 6 should be taken up by a National Club  Championship i.e. the winners of each league would play off for the  championship – it is possible this might also extend to level 4;

Promotion would be sacrosanct;

The season would leave space for County Cups, while for level 7 and  below the Senior and Junior Vase would remain the same as now – these  levels would be left to CBs to administer with variations as they  require.

The county championship will remain in it's present format at the end of the normal playing season.

The Roadshow's are taking place over the next few weeks, with one at Preston being held on the 25th September, this does clash with our next general committee meeting, I am not sure how many clubs will be represented, however I would like to hear the initial views of our clubs with the proposed changes to the game, and if no one can attend on the 25th but would like me to represent their views, then please contact me.

Regards
Stephen McCafferty

Rugby Report

By Neville Waters, Chairman of Rugby - Aug 20th 2008

It has been quite a few years since I last wrote one of these rugby reports. Having now fully retired from paid employment I have been invited (persuaded!) to again get involved with Rugby at New Brighton and I have taken on the job of Chairman of Rugby. Due to work commitments the previous incumbent, Karl Davies, has taken on a new role in which he will be mainly responsible for the second and third teams. Thank you Karl for all the sterling work you have put in as Chairman of Rugby.

I am pleased to report that Steve Dorrington and Ian Kennedy continue as first team coaches and Colin Jones has returned as second team coach after a short break. Also, Alan Lewis and Mark Standish, following excellent debuts last season, will continue to serve as our 1st XV managers.

We have to say goodbye to a few long serving players; Alistair Child, who has decided to finish off his playing career with Wirral, Wayne Clayton, who is leaving after 5 seasons to be nearer his wife’s family in the South East and Danny Jones, who has left for Wilmslow where he lives now. I would like to thank all of these players who have been terrific servants to New Brighton and I wish them well with their new clubs. We will also have to do without, Loa Tupou, who only returned to us last December, and has decided to continue his career as a police officer in Perth, Australia where we wish him and his family well

I am pleased to announce some new recruits:-

Marcus Coast has decided to return after a number of seasons at Caldy. Marcus has played centre for most of his playing career and you will recall that Marcus started his senior rugby career with us at the tender age of 18; he then played for Waterloo for a short time before returning to play a part in what was arguably the most successful period in the club’s recent history.

Greg Hughes, a quality wing three-quarter who originally played for Wallasey, has joined from Birkenhead Park.  He is looking very impressive in training and will help give us that much needed ability to convert pressure into points.

Those of you who watched New Brighton play Winnington Park at the end of last season will remember that their stand-out forward was a young 18 year old wing forward named Ryan McKibbin. I am delighted to inform you that Ryan has decided to develop his rugby career at New Brighton under the expert tutelage of our coaches and club captain Kati Tu’ipulotu. Unfortunately, his start to the season will be delayed while he recovers from the broken thumb he sustained playing summer amateur Rugby League before he joined us.

Our final recruit so far is Kati’s nineteen year old nephew Ikuna Manuofetoa who has stayed in the country to improve his English after representing Tonga in the IRB Junior World Championships recently hosted in Wales. He looks a fine prospect in either of the back two rows of the scrum.

Pre-season training has been going well as the coaches look towards improving on last season’s fourth place league position. The beginning of the season should be very interesting as players and referees alike endeavour to implement the new law variations.
