Rugby Report
By Neville Waters, Chairman of Rugby - Aug 20th 2008
It has been quite a few years since I last wrote one of these rugby reports. Having now fully retired from paid employment I have been invited (persuaded!) to again get involved with Rugby at New Brighton and I have taken on the job of Chairman of Rugby. Due to work commitments the previous incumbent, Karl Davies, has taken on a new role in which he will be mainly responsible for the second and third teams. Thank you Karl for all the sterling work you have put in as Chairman of Rugby.
I am pleased to report that Steve Dorrington and Ian Kennedy continue as first team coaches and Colin Jones has returned as second team coach after a short break. Also, Alan Lewis and Mark Standish, following excellent debuts last season, will continue to serve as our 1st XV managers.
We have to say goodbye to a few long serving players; Alistair Child, who has decided to finish off his playing career with Wirral, Wayne Clayton, who is leaving after 5 seasons to be nearer his wife’s family in the South East and Danny Jones, who has left for Wilmslow where he lives now. I would like to thank all of these players who have been terrific servants to New Brighton and I wish them well with their new clubs. We will also have to do without, Loa Tupou, who only returned to us last December, and has decided to continue his career as a police officer in Perth, Australia where we wish him and his family well
I am pleased to announce some new recruits:-
Marcus Coast has decided to return after a number of seasons at Caldy. Marcus has played centre for most of his playing career and you will recall that Marcus started his senior rugby career with us at the tender age of 18; he then played for Waterloo for a short time before returning to play a part in what was arguably the most successful period in the club’s recent history.
Greg Hughes, a quality wing three-quarter who originally played for Wallasey, has joined from Birkenhead Park. He is looking very impressive in training and will help give us that much needed ability to convert pressure into points.
Those of you who watched New Brighton play Winnington Park at the end of last season will remember that their stand-out forward was a young 18 year old wing forward named Ryan McKibbin. I am delighted to inform you that Ryan has decided to develop his rugby career at New Brighton under the expert tutelage of our coaches and club captain Kati Tu’ipulotu. Unfortunately, his start to the season will be delayed while he recovers from the broken thumb he sustained playing summer amateur Rugby League before he joined us.
Our final recruit so far is Kati’s nineteen year old nephew Ikuna Manuofetoa who has stayed in the country to improve his English after representing Tonga in the IRB Junior World Championships recently hosted in Wales. He looks a fine prospect in either of the back two rows of the scrum.
Pre-season training has been going well as the coaches look towards improving on last season’s fourth place league position. The beginning of the season should be very interesting as players and referees alike endeavour to implement the new law variations.
