Open Play Welcomed
After the close marking of the previous week it was a welcome change to see a much more open game played at Reed’s Lane, where New Brighton defeated Broughton Park by 13 pts to 8.
Stoppages for injuries were frequent in the opening minutes, but the visitors, while two of their men were temporarily off the field, cross the home line for an unconverted try. Two very good tries by Tindall, one converted by Loader, put New Brighton well in the lead, and then Samuel went round the blind side of the scrum for one of those snap tries which he always makes look so easy. The last score was improved by a magnificent kick by Loader from the touch line.
It was a pity that in the closing seconds, a slack defence enabled Winter, the Cumberland forward, to score. Hamilton converting with as good a shot as Loader’s.
Hooker gave a grand display and Michelmore played a confident game at full back. Semple tackled well and Doc Williams successfully worried the opposing scrum half.
